The race for the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Himachal Pradesh has reached its climax as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu returns from Delhi after high-level deliberations. While the Congress struggles to balance the “local versus outsider” candidate debate, the BJP remains in a strategic “wait and watch” mode to exploit any internal friction. This report analyzes the shifting political alliances and the high stakes involved in today’s nomination deadline.
Congress Deliberates on Rajya Sabha Candidates
Political activity in Himachal Pradesh has surged regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha election. After three days of intense discussions in Delhi, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu reached Shimla today. However, the party has not yet officially named its candidate. The Chief Minister shared the feedback of state ministers and MLAs with the central leadership. Many local leaders strongly demand a candidate from Himachal rather than an “outsider.”
The party wants to avoid the mistakes of two years ago. Previously, prioritizing leaders from other states caused significant internal resentment. Therefore, the high command is treading carefully to ensure party unity. Prominent names under discussion include:
Anand Sharma: The former Union Minister has already reached Kasauli.
Col. Dhani Ram Shandil: The current Health Minister is a strong local contender.
Pawan Khera & Supriya Srinate: National spokespersons whose names are also in the mix.
The Shift in Political Math (2024 vs. 2026)
The political landscape has changed since the last Rajya Sabha cycle. In 2024, the Congress candidate faced an unexpected defeat despite having a clear majority. Six MLAs engaged in cross-voting, which led to a major political crisis for the Sukhu government.
In the current 70-member assembly, the Congress holds 40 seats. The BJP follows with 28 seats. Unlike the previous election, there are no independent MLAs in the House today. This suggests a straightforward victory for the ruling party on paper. Nevertheless, the Congress leadership remains cautious. Minister Harshwardhan Chauhan has directed all MLAs to attend the Legislative Party meeting at 11:00 AM today.
BJP Maintains Tactical Silence
The Leader of Opposition, Jai Ram Thakur, has taken several swipes at the Congress’s delay. He stated that the ruling party is “hiding” its candidate due to internal fear. The BJP has not fielded its own candidate yet. Instead, they are waiting for the final Congress announcement.
Thakur hinted that the BJP might stay out of the contest if a local face is chosen. However, the party remains ready to strike if the Congress selects an unpopular “outsider.” The BJP believes the representative must work exclusively for Himachal’s interests.
Rajya Sabha Election Schedule 2026
The election process follows a strict timeline as the nomination window closes today. Officials will begin the scrutiny of papers tomorrow morning. Candidates have until March 9 to withdraw their names if they choose to do so. The final voting and counting will take place on March 16.
